Plant Hardiness Zones

Plant hardiness zones help you to determine if a plant can survive outdoors over the winter.  Zones are based on the average low temperatures for a particular region.  The lower the zone number, the colder the average low temperature.

If you know your plant hardiness zone number, you will be able to choose plants for your garden that have a reasonable chance of survival.  For example, if you live in Zone 3 and you plant a palm tree that is appropriate for Zone 8, there is a pretty darn good chance come spring you’ll have one dead palm tree to cut down!

The USDA’s plant hardiness zones are posted on the United States Nantional Arboretum website.  The map below shows our area is in the 7a & 7b plant hardiness zones.
