Tax Deduction For Donating Cell Phones

If you donate your old cell phone to an eligible organization, you can claim a tax deduction as well as doing good for the environment by recycling your unused phone.  To determine if an organization is eligible, it must be registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) charity.  Most charaties are, and designations would be posted on their signs, on receipts or on paperwork.  The deduction you claim should be equivalent to the price you paid minus 20 percent for each year of use.  The IRS hasn’t really clarified how the value is arrived at, so you may want to make sure to review it with your tax professional.  Be sure to get a receipt for your cell phone donation for your tax records.

Secure The Call is one of many organizations that accepts donated cell phones.  On their website, you can print a tax deduction form and even a mailing label so you won’t have to pay postage when sending them your old phone.  Secure The Call is a non-profit coalition of police departments, battered women’s shelters, neighborhood watch groups, community service organizations & senior citizens centers that takes your donated phone and converts it into a 911 emergency only phone for distribution among the coalition.
